The 2019 Toyota C-HR meaty crossover is almost looks. All about looks.

On looks alone, the 2019 Toyota C-Hour is a breath of fresh air for small crossovers. Or maybe after looking at one, you lot need fresh air? We can't tell.

It's all nearly most the expect, and we freely admit that it won't be for most folks. We like that.

What we don't similar is an underpowered engine hauling a surprising corporeality of mass and cramped rear quarters. Beauty is pain and the 2019 C-HR lands at a 5.5 overall. (Read more nearly how nosotros rate cars.)

This twelvemonth, the news is new LE and Express trims to bookend the XLE trim that was bachelor terminal yr. The C-Hr LE is more intriguing here; it costs roughly $1,300 less than last year'south base trim and includes the aforementioned touchscreen and active prophylactic that the other levels have. The Limited trim adds leather and other upmarket touches for nearly $xxx,000 to start.

The 2019 C-HR trades on its looks, which will appeal to some. The funky intersecting and stylish shapes are deceptively hiding a relatively large crossover, merely they write a check that passengers will take to greenbacks. More on that in a second.

Under the hood, the C-Hr is powered by an overworked inline-4 that shuttles 144 horsepower through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front end-bicycle-drive only. Any pretense of off-roading should end at the C-Hour's depression-slung jowls.

The small engine is tasked with moving more than three,300 pounds with people aboard efficiently, and information technology returns upward to 29 mpg combined.

The front seats are reasonably spacious, just at the price of rear seat passengers. Toyota quotes just over 31 inches of rear seat leg room—which is compact—but it gets shorter with taller passengers aboard.

Keep the Toyota C-Hour as a 2-seat affair and it's comfortable and can accommodate more than than 32 cubic feet of cargo with the rear seats folded downward.

The good news this year is a new base version that rings the bell at just under $22,000 and includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay compatibility, standard automatic emergency braking, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, 17-inch wheels, and cloth upholstery. That'southward relatively good value among competitors, and may expect better to some first-time shoppers than the canvass metal.

The 2019 Toyota C-Hour small crossover has mode to spare.

The 2019 Toyota C-Hr has mode, which is more than many crossovers can say these days. Whether you like the C-Hr's style is another question.

We requite the C-HR two points to a higher place effort for the loftier degree of difficulty to dive into the deep stop. It gets a 7. (Read more almost how we rate cars.)

Picking upward where the Nissan Juke left off, the C-HR is a smattering of kinks, curves, kickbacks, and curls rolled into ane.

It's a clever design for what would otherwise exist a v-door hatchback. Boil it down to the essence and its the same "rising window line, sloped roof line" that others have somehow fabricated boring already.

The C-Hr—Toyota says it ways "Coupe, High Riding"—is visually smaller than its measurements. It'southward wider and taller than the Yaris, but hides information technology in all the correct places.

That'due south somewhat due to the lines that distract from the car's overall size. The headlights wrap tightly into the wheel wells, and the deep side stampings press into the skeletal shape. The busy rear end sticks out—literally and figuratively—with bracketed taillights that are as expressive every bit the rest of the car.

A dissimilarity-colour roof is bachelor for $500 more for extroverts with money to spend, but we're not convinced that it'll age well. (Eds note: We could brand the same larger point for the rest of the car, too.)

Inside, the car needs to pay back some of those shapes that the outside mortgaged. The cockpit is fairly contained and sharp, only any other position that'south not called the driver's seat tin can exist dark and somewhat deadening.

That's doubly true for the dorsum seats, which are compromised with an odd handle and experience very dark due to the mesomorphic roof pillars.

The 2019 Toyota C-HR lacks power to be anything more than than a tall-riding urban hatchback.

Maybe you're non in a hurry? Maybe your commute begins in the bedroom and ends in the kitchen? Maybe the speed limit seems generous?

Maybe nosotros presume too much.

We're firm in ane assumption: You won't get the 2019 Toyota C-HR going in a hurry.

That's considering the C-60 minutes's single powertrain doesn't motivate the crossover'south mass with any urgency. All-wheel drive isn't available (mercifully) so information technology gets a 4 out of 10 for performance. (Read more than about how nosotros charge per unit cars.)

The tale of the tape doesn't lie: the C-Hr relies on a 2.0-liter inline-iv that makes 144 horsepower and 139 pound-feet of torque to move 3,300 pounds. We judge that the C-HR accelerates up to lx mph from a stop somewhere between "leisurely" and "somewhen."

The engine is teamed with a continuously variable automated manual (CVT) that helps keep the C-Hour efficient and probable geared toward effectually-town jaunts—call up stoplight-to-stoplight stuff.

The CVT does its best to stay out of the way, which is a skillful thing. Punch it into "Sport" mode and the CVT steps through simulated gears for a jazzy grapheme—we appreciate the effort.

The amend news comes from the C-HR'due south handling and steering, which is good for a small car that starts around $20,000.

Toyota gifted the C-HR front end struts with Sachs dampers and a beefy front stabilizer bar, and an independent rear suspension with double wishbones. The C-HR skips the econobox treatment of a rear twist axle and information technology pays off: the C-HR can exist fun to bulldoze.

Provided y'all stay on the pavement, of course. Stateside, the C-Hour skips all-wheel drive (Eds annotation: Nosotros're not certain adding weight would help much, anyway.) and lacks the ground clearance to be anything other than an urban runabout.

Different other Toyotas that are very calorie-free, the C-Hr's steering feels heavier and with more consequence, which nosotros appreciate.

Review continues beneath

The 2019 Toyota C-HR is a looker just comfort takes a dorsum seat to style—and information technology's not very large back there.

The 2019 Toyota C-HR has all the mental attitude of a sporty 'ute with spunk, we just wished it developed the "utility" part a lilliputian more.

Starting from an average score of 5, we ding it one for lack of back seat infinite. It gets a iv out of 10 for comfort. (Read more than about how we charge per unit cars.)

The C-HR rides atop a compact platform that information technology shares with other small Toyotas including the Prius and Corolla that measures 103.nine inches between the wheels. Unlike those cars, the CH-R needs some of that existent estate for its expressive shape, which includes bad-mannered rear door handles and cutouts, that cuts into rear leg room. By the numbers, rear seat passengers get 31.seven inches of leg room, merely tall front-seat riders tin significantly cut into that.

The front seats are supportive just tin can experience thin, and sit lower than we'd wait from a alpine-riding hatchback. The rear seats sit higher, and take head room for 6-footers, but feel dark due to the automobile's aggressive shape and small-scale windows.

One bright spot: Nosotros've noticed that car seats fit into the rear seats surprisingly well.

The C-60 minutes offers 19.0 cubic feet of cargo room behind the second row that expands to 36.4 cubes, which is capacious for a small-scale SUV. A small rear cutout somewhat spoils the utility of that space—something the new Toyota Corolla Hatchback aces.

Like a tango, we run across the C-Hour beingness best for ii. Any more than and it feels a little clumsy to the states.

The 2019 C-Hr's standard automated emergency braking outshines pocket-sized demerits in the Toyota's prophylactic scorecard.

The 2019 Toyota C-Hr gets all the big rubber stuff right. Federal and contained testers give the crossover expert marks for crash condom and Toyota bundles in a comprehensive ready of advanced safety features.

Details thing though. The IIHS isn't costless about the C-HR's headlights and in that location'south a substantial rearward vision penalization for those out-there looks. The C-HR gets a 6 on our rubber scale for now. (Read more about how we charge per unit cars.)

A closer look at the crash-safety numbers reveals a v-star overall score, including four stars for front end- and rollover-crash safety.

The IIHS gave the C-Hour top "Good" scores on all its tests, including the new passenger-side minor overlap crash examination. The IIHS also rated the small-scale Toyota's automated emergency braking system as "Superior" at fugitive frontwards crashes.

The rest of the suite of advanced safety features on the C-HR aid, besides. In add-on to automatic braking, the C-60 minutes gets every bit standard forward-collision warnings, active lane control, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise command. Bullheaded-spot monitors are optional.

Those blind spots are prodigious. The chunky looks eat into outward vision toward the rear and makes the blind-spot monitors not only a adept thought, but also somewhat mandatory.

The other demerit? A "Poor" rating for the C-HR's headlights past the IIHS.

Mentum up, though. The C-HR is equipped with ten airbags, which is prolific for such a modest hatchback.

A new eight.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay; the 2019 Toyota C-Hr has our attentions.

The news this year for the Toyota C-HR is a base of operations LE trim level that makes the spunky sprite more affordable for buyers.

Starting at about $22,000, the 2019 Toyota C-60 minutes LE is equipped with cloth upholstery, daytime running lights, 17-inch wheels, a suite of advanced rubber features (that we cover higher up), dual-climate command, Bluetooth connectivity, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen for infotainment with Apple CarPlay compatibility.

That's practiced for the money and worth a signal in a higher place average on our calibration. Some other signal for the splendid touchscreen and information technology gets a 7 out of 10. (Read more almost how we rate cars.)

You could spend more on the C-HR, but we're not sure you're getting more.

The elevation trim this twelvemonth is a new C-Hr Limited class that adds leather upholstery with front seats with power lumbar aligning, premium sound, xviii-inch wheels, blind-spot monitors, keyless ignition, and fog lights for more than $27,000 to start.

We're not sold on that value and would propose many to stick with the base trim, especially considering the crossover'due south intended audition of start-time carbuyers.

A handful of personalization options available from the factory and dealers can customize the C-HR'southward looks, which will appeal to many shoppers who are attracted to the funky looks of the cute Toyota 'ute.

We have our reservations virtually the base infotainment system: it'southward not especially intuitive compared to its rivals. The skillful news this year is newfound Apple CarPlay compatibility that supplements the system with a popular smartphone interface that handles almost daily tasks. The bad news is that in that location is no Android Automobile compatibility for that infotainment organization—sorry Android fans. The worse news is that without springing for Toyota'south optional navigation system, Android users may be stuck with Sentinel GPS, a smartphone-based navigation supplement that is lousy.

The 2019 C-HR pays a price for the funky looks in fuel economy, too.

Despite its small size, the 2019 Toyota C-60 minutes's relatively heavy torso means that its only average for fuel economic system.

The EPA rates the 2019 C-60 minutes at 27 mpg urban center, 31 highway, 29 combined. That's good enough for a 5 out of 10 on our scale. (Read more virtually how we rate cars.)

Other competitors do improve. Front-wheel-bulldoze versions of the 2019 Mazda CX-iii and 2019 Honda 60 minutes-V are rated at 30 mpg combined or better. The Nissan Kicks leads much of the agglomeration at 33 mpg combined, and hybrids such as the Kia Niro or Hyundai Ioniq go further.

Stellar looks, functioning, quality. The list of super features and engineering science is long. Driving and handling spot on. I retrieve the rear window visibility is big and clear. This is without dorsum seat passengers. Three (three) things I hate: 1) Driver's cup holder is nether dash below knees. Have to lean over to reach. Doesn't seem condom and definitely non ergonomic. Passenger cup holder is where driver's cup holder should be. 2) Take to prune garage door opener to visor. Should have special compartment in ceiling. This seems dated and cheap. 3) This ~$30,000 car does non take powered back door features to open up and close. Endmost is especially awkward. Fifty-fifty Toyota Owners Manual says you have to pull downward with handle (fingers toward you) and push button down to shut. Pull then button to close is too many manual movements for a 2019 Smart operating car. Feels like the dorsum door is from the 80s. + More »
